Performance Comparison
Likes
Hello Bello is a good absorber with a higher score in this test than much of the competition. When comparing the filter paper moisture residue against the competition, it fares well and implies that your little one's bum will stay fairly dry.
Hello Bello also seems to offer better-than-average leak protections. With features and functions to prohibit the release of liquids from the diaper, we found the Hello Bello did better than much of the competition, with less liquid in the runoff pan than other diapers. Since some diapers had significant "urine" in the pan, it was nice to see very little over three test periods.
Hello Bello is a soft and comfortable feeling diaper with high survey results in our tests for the softness of fabric, leg cuffs, tabs, and waistband stretchiness. The motion points could be more skin-friendly, but overall, it seems to be a nice diaper for sensitive baby skin.
For a traditional diaper, Hello Bello is making an effort to offer more for your baby's health than some of the popular competitors you've probably heard of. This diaper is free from Chlorine Processing, Artificial Fragrance, Phthalates, Parabens, Lotions, Latex, TBT, DBT, MBT. Like some other brands, we appreciate that there is no artificial fragrance involved, but it begs the question of what is involved in the production of the diaper, and more transparency here would be better.
For ingredients and eco-friendliness, they claim to use "Totally chlorine free (TCF) fluff pulp from sustainably managed forests, a high-performance Super Absorbent Polymer, polypropylene/polyethylene/polyester nonwoven fibers, plant-derived PLA nonwoven fiber, spandex strands, and an elastomeric film."
Durability for Triple Care is also good compared to the competition.
We didn't experience any faulty tabs or SAP leaks in our tests and only discovered a handful of complaints in our research about faulty tabs. Given that no product is free of all defects, it fared well compared to competitors.
Dislikes
This diaper uses inks they described as: "We use inks (made without disperse dyes) that have been carefully assessed for safety and non-sensitization - similar to the inks used in things like food packaging and colored contact lenses." This sounds pretty cool, right? It might be. The problem for us is it isn't really transparent or truthful. Telling us it is perhaps safe enough to eat or shove in our eye isn't really telling us anything. We still don't know what the makeup is or isn't, and this is a subtle (and arguably minor) form of misleading language we aren't fans of. It feels like coddling or insinuating that parents wouldn't understand or don't deserve the truth. Don't fool yourself, the company knows what the inks are made from, and if they wanted to be transparent, they would.
Should You Buy the Hello Bello?
Yes. With impressive test results for absorption and leak protection, this diaper does the job better than much of the competition. It is a reasonably priced mid-range diaper that is easy to find in stores and online. It comes in various adorable patterns and is comfy for babies and durable for parents. We love the nods to baby's health and the environment and feel like it does a nice balance of creating a thoughtful disposable green diaper with higher-than-average scores in every metric, a rare find in this category.
What Other Disposable Diaper Should You Consider?
If your budget is tight and you need something just as good or better at absorption with a smaller price tag, the Kirkland Signature is a good choice. With a high overall score and perfect absorption results, this inexpensive diaper is a true gem for families on a strict budget who don't want to sacrifice performance for a smaller price. If your goal is easily accessible and a popular brand name, then Huggies Snug & Dry can be found almost anywhere. If you want a high-performing diaper and budget is no concern, then the Parasol Clear and Dry is one to consider. This high-end diaper comes with a hefty price tag, but it offers more for baby health and eco-friendliness while still being one of the best absorbers in the group.
